* PAFF 2025 - BEST FEATURE DOCUMENTARY NOMINEE
In 2002, while waiting for his car to be repaired in the small town of Mbirizi, Uganda, actor/filmmaker Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine met photographer Kibaate Aloysius Ssalongo when he stumbled into his photo studio. The chance encounter had a profound impact on Ntare’s life, leading him into a 22-year journey during which he explores and documents the complexities of Kibaate’s rich personal and professional life, having lived and worked in the small Ugandan town spanning from the late 1950s until he passed away in 2006. This masterful documentary offers a rare and intimate look at the transformative power of photography, as a community uncovers long-lost photos, family secrets, and previously unseen relatives, sparking important conversations about patriarchy, history, community and the complex nature of family bonds, all brought to life through Kibaate’s lens. It's a story of art, legacy, and the enduring power of memory. Winner of numerous awards and named one of the Ten Best African Documentaries of 2024.
